Ricardo Emissions Legislation EMLEG - Iran

Status

Since 2000, the standards for light vehicles in Iran have been as detailed in Table 1 (ECE urban driving cycle?); effectively ECE R15.04 / ECE R49. Although already an accepted standard in Iran, this was generally not enforced until 1 January 2000.

The Department Of the Environment (DOE) are charged with reviewing motor vehicle emissions legislation every 3 years following on-going consultation from the Ministry Of Oil (MOO) and the Ministry Of Industry (MOI).

Previous Status

Prior to the political changes of 1979, vehicles conforming to ECE R15.04 and ECE R49 were accepted in Iran although application was not believed to be mandatory. In the years immediately following, environmental matters were not of high priority.

Under the present, rather more stable, conditions, there is more interest in pollution generally and some recent university presentations have focused on inner-city air quality. Unleaded gasoline is under consideration. Interest in ISO standards work has been shown as has the desire to re-establish international contacts.

Therefore, although no mandatory vehicle exhaust emissions standards currently exist, and may not for some time to come, there are stirrings of interest in such matters.
