Senior Consultant - Climate and Energy Policy

Clean Energy & Environmental Solutions (CE&ES), one of Ricardo plc’s five operating business units, is a leader in sustainability consultancy, solving complex environmental challenges through industry-leading analysis, advice, and data. With more than 40 years of heritage in addressing air quality, environmental and sustainability issues, our customers value us for our deep understanding and breadth of services covering the entire value chain from evidence, policy & strategy to implementation.

Our Digital Modelling practice is one of seven practices within CE&ES, and is responsible for complex quantitative modelling across Europe, with clients such as the European Commission, National Governments, and private clients. We are looking at expanding our power sector and electricity modelling team, and the Energy Modelling Analyst will play a key role in enabling this growth.

The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Consultant to join our team, specializing in Climate and Energy Policy Assessment and Low Carbon Transition. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in climate economics, energy systems and economic analysis. They will contribute to complex consultancy and research projects, perform economic analysis for highly policy relevant topics, provide strategic insights, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions that address climate change and promote sustainable energy practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage complex research and consultancy projects for a diverse range of clients, including governments, EU-funded research projects, and private sector organizations.
  • Conduct rigorous analysis of current and proposed policies, low carbon transition pathways, just transition and other relevant topics, identifying their socioeconomic and environmental.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations that communicate complex technical and economic information to both expert and non-expert audiences.
  • Utilize results from large economic models to analyze the implications of climate and energy policies and to assess economic impacts.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide evidence-based insights on current topics relevant to sustainable growth, climate and energy.
  • Write proposals to secure funding for research and consultancy projects, demonstrating the relevance and impact of proposed work.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments in climate science, renewable energy technologies, economic impact assessments, and international policy frameworks.
  • Mentor junior consultants and researchers and contribute to their professional development through knowledge sharing and guidance.
  • Engage with stakeholders through workshops, seminars, and conferences. Participate in project meetings to disseminate work.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Economics, Engineering, Environmental Science, Energy Policy or a related field.
  • Experience in climate and energy policy assessment, economic analysis, or a related discipline.
  • Proven track record of leading complex projects and delivering high-quality outputs.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience in quantitative and qualitative policy and economic analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively.
  • Familiarity with global climate policy frameworks, such as the Paris Agreement, and regional energy and economic policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Skills:

  • Proficiency in data analysis tools, economic modeling software, and economic evaluation methodologies.
  • Experience with grant writing and securing project funding.
