Consulting

Economic Modeler - Climate and Energy

Our vision is to create a safe and sustainable world.

Ricardo plc is a global strategic, environmental, and engineering consulting company. With over 100 years of engineering excellence and employing close to 3,000 employees in more than 20 countries, we provide exceptional levels of expertise in delivering leading-edge and innovative cross-sector sustainable products and solutions. Every day, we enable our customers to solve the most complex and dynamic challenges to help achieve a safe and sustainable world.

About Us

Our Digital Modelling Practice is a cornerstone of our Climate, Energy & Environmental Services (CE&ES) division, delivering complex quantitative modeling and impactful economic insights across Europe and the world. We are a team of world-class researchers and modellers dedicated to addressing the most pressing economic and environmental challenges of our time. At the heart of our work lies the GEM-E3 model—a sophisticated Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model used by global institutions such as the OECD, World Bank, European Commission, and others to assess the economic impacts of climate and energy policies and the cost of climate change. Our contributions are featured in IPCC reports, published in top-tier scientific journals, and frequently peer-reviewed at the highest level. At the same time, we provide high-end evidence-based support to national and international organizations.

The Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Quantitative Modeller to support with model development and scenario-based analysis. The role involves policy impact assessments for the EU and non-EU low carbon transition pathways, economic modelling, data analysis, and research to assess macroeconomic, distributional and regional implications of climate and energy policies and climate impacts. Other topics of interest include competitiveness, investment strategies, fiscal balances and trade dynamics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply economic models (e.g., CGE models like GEM-E3).
  • Conduct model-based assessments supporting EU-funded research, climate policies, and IPCC processes.
  • Review and synthesize scientific, technical, and market reports to inform assessments.
  • Develop and apply energy system modelling tools using GAMS, R, and/or Python.
  • Collect, structure, maintain, and analyse large datasets relevant to energy, economy and environment.
  • Draft technical reports and project specifications.
  • Monitor EU climate, energy, and transport policies and their economic impacts.
  • Collaborate with other team members to deliver high-quality research.
  • Manage EU-funded research and consultancy projects efficiently

Key Competencies and Experience

  • MSc or higher in Engineering, Economics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Relevant experience or a PhD with applicable experience.
  • Strong background in climate/environmental economics, including energy decarbonization and mitigation pathways.
  • Experience in energy or economic systems modelling and climate policy assessment.
  • Proven programming skills in GAMS and/or Python/R.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive and collaborative approach.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Excellent written and spoken English (Spanish is optional, with courses available).
