Sophie's Story

What is your role at Ricardo?

As a Commercial Manager I am responsible for providing practical and strategic consultation and guidance to the organisation on all contractual, risk and business decisions that could have an impact on the business, from a contractual perspective throughout the contract life cycle. My current areas of responsibility are the National Chemical Emergency Centre (NCEC); any contracts or bids with the business’ biggest client, the European Commission; and providing legal support to Ricardo’s Automotive/EMEA entity.

What does your average day at Ricardo look like?

There is no typical day as such, as much of my work depends on the sales and bid activity occurring in my areas. I could be supporting bid submissions by reviewing and providing advice on proposals; negotiating contract terms with clients; or answering queries from colleagues. The only thing that is consistent is that it’s always busy and my colleagues will always manage to surprise me with a question I haven’t dealt with before.

What do you look forward to at work?

Team meetings and interactions with other departments are what I most look forward to at work. My role is very collaborative role and I am very fortunate to have built strong relationships with people across the business. I look forward to hearing about projects/challenges/opportunities and working together to resolve any issues.

What do you find most rewarding at work?/are you proud to work at Ricardo?

It’s always satisfying to be able to conclude negotiations with a client and convert the opportunity, especially if they have been particularly lengthy and challenging. It’s all the more rewarding when these negotiations end with the agreement of favourable and low risk terms for the company.

How have you developed your career at Ricardo?

I started as an Assistant Commercial Manager during the pandemic, and quickly progressed to my current role. I am now starting my World Commerce and Contracting professional qualification, which is being paid for and supported by Ricardo, to (hopefully) help further progress in my career.
