Senior Energy Researcher and Consultant

The Global Integrated Assessment Modelling team (formerly part of E3Modelling) is developing and applying the models Prometheus and OPEN-PROM. Our focus is the energy transition towards decarbonization, and we apply data science, energy-economy models, and other relevant tools to analyze in detail the shift to a greener energy and economic system. We are looking for a Senior Energy Researcher and Policy Consultant to join our team of experienced researchers and engage with us in further developing and applying our national and global Models for energy and climate policy scenario analysis.  

 Key Responsibilities

  • Review and synthesise scientific, technical, and market reports into structured inputs for quantitative modelling and assessment.
  • Develop policy-relevant insights, including policy recommendations and policy briefs, based on modelling results.
  • Apply global and national energy system and integrated assessment models within EU-funded research projects, providing analytical support to national and international climate policy processes, including contributions to IPCC process
  • Draft reports and/or presentations on the energy sector based on model results.
  • Take end-to-end responsibility for research and consultancy projects, acting autonomously or in close coordination with senior colleagues as required.
  • Contribute to proposal preparation in collaboration and alignment with the unit director and the serior staff.
  • Monitor EU and global climate and energy policy developments and assess their implications for ongoing modelling analyses.
  • Liaise between modelling teams and policy-oriented work to ensure consistency between quantitative results and narrative outputs
  • Support the interpretation, validation, and contextualisation of modelling results for different policy and stakeholder audiences.
  • Assist in ensuring quality control and coherence of modelling-related content across project deliverables and reports.

Key Competencies and Experience

  • Hold an MSc and/or PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, computational modelling, operations research, mathematical economics, energy/climate policy, or physics.
  • Professional experience in energy systems analysis, climate policy and/or integrated assessment modelling, including the development and interpretation of scenarios for policy analysis.
  • Preference for applied experience in using analytical and/or modelling tools, with programming knowledge in R,  Matlab, Python, or preferably GAMS.
  • Large experience in using the Microsoft Suite, especially excel for data analysis
  • Experience translating quantitative modelling results into policy-relevant insights for non-technical audiences (e.g. policymakers, stakeholders, project partners).
  • Demonstrated ability to delivering high-quality results.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset, with a collaborative attitude and eagerness to learn.
  • Strong writing skills, with experience in academic articles, technical reports, or policy reports in English (desirable).
  • Fluent in verbal and written communication in English.
  • Manage and coordinate research and consultancy projects, either independently or jointly with senior colleagues, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
  • Demonstrated capability to work autonomously on complex analytical tasks, while contributing effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
