Product sustainability
The global focus on sustainability is forcing governments to radically reconsider how we use chemicals, and their impact on human health and the environment.
Ricardo performs chemical registrations, plan and manage a testing strategy, and assist with ongoing regulatory responsibilities. We also update existing registrations and managing the ongoing regulatory responsibilities of companies post registration. Record keeping for cost sharing between registrants is performed in a robust, fair, transparent and non-discriminatory way inline with regulatory requirements.
The EU REACH and UK REACH regulations are constantly evolving and diversification between the two regulations can be a major issue for companies wishing to supply both EU and UK markets.
Maintaining regulatory compliance requires regular inventory reviews and up-to-date regulatory knowledge which can be both time-consuming and problematic. Chemical registration is the beginning of the story, not the end. Regulatory authorities are increasingly revisiting registrations and requesting new information and assessment to be provided. A horizon scanning tool performs an inventory check to ascertain whether a substance appears on any global regulatory lists, providing status updates in a clear, easy-to-read report. The tool details any obligations and if substances need alteration, allowing you to make strategic decisions sooner and maintaining organisational compliance.
The sustainability movement has triggered numerous global policy initiatives increasing awareness of chemical persistence when examining global plastic pollution and the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment. This focus creates two key challenges for the global chemicals industry: the increased demands for biodegradation testing and persistence assessments, and the complexity of the assessments.

Per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) are recognised as a significant environmental and public health challenge and are technically very difficult and expensive to remove from waste, soil and water.
