Ricardo supports local schools at Hydrogen Grand Prix South Australia State Final
30 June 2025
Ricardo proudly supported two South Australian schools, Brighton Secondary School and St John’s Grammar School, in their participation at the Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) South Australian State Final.
The students delivered a strong performance, demonstrating technical creativity, determination, and solid on-track racing with their hydrogen-powered vehicle.
The H2GP is an international STEM program developed by Horizon Educational that challenges students to design, build, and race hydrogen-powered remote-controlled vehicles. It promotes hands-on learning in renewable energy, engineering, and teamwork, preparing students with practical skills for a sustainable future. This event was made possible through the support of sponsors including Ricardo and the Australian Government.
Brighton Secondary School’s hydrogen-powered vehicle, ‘Phantom,’ delivered an outstanding performance, earning an impressive second place finish. The custom-built, front-wheel-drive racing model was designed for endurance, featuring a carbon fiber chassis, a brushless motor, and a modified hydrogen fuel cell optimized for efficiency. Key innovations included 3D-printed components, a quick-release fuel system, and a magnet-mounted body, showcasing the students’ technical creativity and engineering skills.
St John’s Grammar School also competed with their vehicle, ‘Ka Chow,’ demonstrating great dedication and teamwork throughout the event. The team placed 16th in a highly competitive field, gaining valuable hands-on experience in renewable energy and engineering principles.
Ricardo representatives, Jorge Martin Gistau, Toby Mackereth and Joshua Sims, were fully engaged throughout the event, contributing to the judging panel and supporting the students.
“We’re inspired by the initiative, problem-solving, and enthusiasm these students have shown – qualities essential for advancing sustainable engineering,” said Jorge Martin Gistau from Ricardo.
Supporting both Brighton Secondary and St John’s Grammar School aligns with Ricardo’s purpose-led mission to nurture education and innovation as Australia transitions toward a clean energy future.
We congratulate all the teams who competed and celebrate the passion and dedication of the students – they truly embody the spirit of progress and innovation we champion at Ricardo.
