Challenge
Dutch regional train operator, Qbuzz, has ordered a new fleet of ETCS-equipped train sets, driven by the upcoming rollout of ETCS (European Train Control System) on the Kijfhoek – Belgian border route.
Being the first ETCS vehicles for the operator, Qbuzz enlisted Ricardo to assist with the procurement of the trains and to provide guidance on the procedural and organisational changes required to support ERTMS operations.
Approach
Drawing on our previous experience of ETCS rolling stock procurement, our experts helped Qbuzz to define their technical requirements in readiness for the tendering process, and will continue to support them throughout the design, production, testing, and operational implementation of the new vehicles.
On the organisational side, our teams are providing specialist support including ECM (Entity in Charge of Maintenance), CSM REA (Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment), Key Management and chain monitoring.
Results
Upon completion Qbuzz will possess a new fleet equipped with ETCS according to the latest Baseline 4 specifications. This will ensure a smooth transition through different signalling and control systems, first to ATB (Automatische TreinBeïnvloeding, a Dutch term for Automatic Train Protection) operations via STM-ATB (Specific Transmission Module - ATB) and later to ETCS Level 2 operations, enabling continued and future-proof passenger service on the MerwedeLingelijn.
