Pioneering net zero in maritime infrastructure
Customer Challenge
A UK port set an ambitious goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. To make meaningful progress towards this target, the Port required a robust and transparent strategy grounded in accurate data. Central to this was the need for a comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory that would account for all emissions (scope 1, 2 and 3). The existing methodology needed updating to reflect the latest best practices and to ensure that all relevant emissions sources were captured.
In addition, the Port was exploring the potential of shore power as a key decarbonisation measure. Understanding the carbon accounting implications and technical feasibility of this initiative was essential to inform future investment decisions.
Solution
Ricardo was engaged to support with developing a detailed and forward-looking GHG inventory for the year 2024. The work began with a thorough review and update of the Port’s emissions accounting methodology, ensuring alignment with recognised standards and expanding the scope 3 categories to provide a complete picture of emissions.
A key component of the analysis was identifying emissions hotspots. Ricardo’s team conducted an in-depth assessment of vessel emissions, which were found to contribute over 70% of the Port’s total emissions. This insight was critical in shaping the Port’s decarbonisation priorities.
Ricardo also carried out a technical evaluation of the Port’s shore power ambitions, including assessing the suitability of different vessel types for shore power connection and analysing how this would affect the Port’s carbon footprint. The findings helped clarify the potential impact of shore power on emissions reduction and informed the Port’s strategic direction.
The next phase of the engagement will involve reviewing and refining the Port’s existing net zero strategy considering the updated inventory and technical insights. Ricardo will provide tailored recommendations to ensure the strategy remains fit for purpose and aligned with the Port’s long-term sustainability goals.
Customer Benefit
The project has delivered a comprehensive and transparent GHG inventory that empowers the Port to understand its emissions profile in full. By covering scopes 1, 2, and 3, the inventory provides a solid foundation for tracking progress year-on-year and reporting to stakeholders with confidence.
The identification of key emissions sources – particularly vessel activity – enables the Port to focus its efforts on the most impactful areas. This targeted approach supports the development of cost-effective decarbonisation measures and strengthens the case for investment in technologies such as shore power.
Moreover, the insights gained from the shore power analysis offer practical guidance on implementation, helping the Port to plan infrastructure upgrades that will deliver real emissions reductions.
With a clearer understanding of its emissions and a roadmap for action, the Port is well-positioned to engage stakeholders, secure funding, and demonstrate leadership in maritime sustainability. The work undertaken by Ricardo not only supports the Port’s net zero ambition but also enhances its reputation as a forward-thinking organisation committed to environmental stewardship.
