Carbon capture, utilisation and storage
Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) is a vital tool to reduce emissions especially in hard-to-decarbonise sectors. It unlocks access to negative emissions and innovative products made from recycled carbon.

Carbon capture utilisation and storage
Ricardo's experts have a comprehensive and innovative portfolio of capabilities in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS), supporting both public and private sector decarbonisation efforts.
Our deep understanding of the power generation, CO₂ capture and industrial utilisation technologies as well as our knowledge of the policy and regulatory landscape worldwide enables us to support both policy makers and organisations needing to decarbonise their operations.
Our support extends from strategic planning to practical implementation. Ricardo engineers led the consortium behind the BIOCCUS demonstrator CHP plant, which captures up to 95% of CO₂ emissions from biomass and delivers scalable, modular CCUS solutions that produce biochar, clean energy, and food-grade CO₂.
Our key capabilities in carbon capture, utilisation and storage
We will help you to design or assess options for carbon management. We can support concept design and rapid, multi-criteria assessment of options for:
- fuel sources,
- process design,
- CO2 capture,
- transport,
- utilisation and,
- storage,
considering technologies, locations, regulatory compliance, life cycle assessment, and likelihood of market support.
Our team of multi-disciplinary engineers can help see your project through from concept to completion, supporting with CCUS project design, technical feasibility studies, procurement, and owners’ engineering services.
We will help you formulate or review business cases for CCUS investment, including strategies, economics, commercial arrangements, financing and delivery approaches.
We provide detailed technical analysis to inform your cash flow and investment returns, helping to identify which CCUS configurations are most viable and competitive.
We can help your organisation understand the latest changes in CCUS and wider energy and environmental legislation and policy and how this will impact your business.
We support policy makers to shape future policy initiatives relevant to CCUS, bringing expertise across the policy, technology, economics and legal domains.
We conduct evidence-based analysis to provide expert advice on regulatory frameworks for CO2 transportation and storage.
We can carry out technical and commercial due diligence for CCUS projects to give you confidence in your investment choices.
We do this through assessing technologies, GHG impacts, project feasibility, techno-economics, environmental impacts (including air, land and water factors), timescales, supply chains and plans.
We will help you to assess opportunities for utilising captured CO2 including for chemical or e-fuel markets.
We provide expert advice on the potential for, and development of, CCUS hubs. We will help you understand the availability of CO2 sources, CO2 transport and CO2 storage, in addition to helping you to navigate CCUS policy and carbon markets.
Ricardo is leading a consortium comprising Bluebox Energy and Woodtek Engineering. The consortium is designing, installing and operating a combined heat and power demonstrator plant with a carbon negative footprint to showcase climate repairing technology, and demonstrate the effectiveness of community scale negative emission technology plus clean energy using sustainably-sourced forestry waste.
