Principal Consultant – Landfill and Remediation Engineering

The Role

Within our Energy Infrastructure Transition Practice, we are growing our portfolio in landfill engineering and remediation. This includes projects across the Middle East, Asia and Australia, supporting clients in the delivery of engineered landfill design, site remediation and waste infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will act as the lead engineer for the planning, design and supervision of landfill and remediation projects, forming part of a global team of waste and infrastructure specialists. This is a key role supporting Ricardo’s international growth in waste infrastructure delivery, offering the opportunity to contribute technical leadership on a wide range of waste treatment technologies and complex engineering challenges.

Key accountabilities
Project delivery and management

  • Lead and deliver landfill engineering and remediation projects, including conceptual planning, detailed design and construction supervision.
  • Contribute to a range of infrastructure projects involving waste treatment technologies including thermal treatment, anaerobic digestion, MRFs and composting.
  • Prepare high-quality technical outputs, including reports, 3D design drawings, analysis, research and presentations, with a focus on landfill, remediation and earthworks, ensuring alignment with international best practice and local regulations.
  • Carry out engineering calculations related to landfill design, covering aspects such as geosynthetics, hydrology and geotechnical stability.
  • Develop scopes of work for site investigations to be undertaken by third parties and assess resulting data.
  • Undertake operational and site closure planning, scoping and feasibility studies and due diligence assessments.
  • Manage and deliver project tasks to schedule, budget and required technical quality.
  • Support proposal development, including technical content and costings for landfill and remediation projects.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients across the Middle East, Asia and Australia, ensuring high-quality service delivery.

Technical leadership and team development

  • Provide subject matter expertise in landfill design (e.g. geosynthetics, hydrology, geotechnical stability), leachate and landfill gas management and remediation engineering.
  • Lead the preparation of technical specifications, bills of quantities and construction quality assurance documentation.
  • Provide civil engineering input to a range of waste and energy-related projects.

Client engagement and business development

  • Lead client liaison for key projects, understanding needs and tailoring technical approaches accordingly.
  • Support business development by contributing to and leading the preparation of technical proposals and bids for landfill and remediation projects
  • Contribute to Ricardo’s thought leadership through insights, analysis and knowledge-sharing within the team and with clients.

Additional/special features of the role

  • Occasional international travel to client sites, project meetings and industry events will be required.
  • Flexibility to work across time zones to support collaboration with global teams.

Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualification

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (preferably with a geotechnical or geo-environmental focus).
  • Experience delivering landfill and remediation engineering projects, including construction supervision and design.
  • Expertise in applying international landfill and remediation standards (e.g. US EPA, EU directives).
  • Advanced skills in AutoCAD Civil 3D with a willingness to expand expertise into other design and software tools as needed.
  • Excellent written and spoken business English, with the ability to produce high-quality client reports, deliver presentations and engage confidently in meetings with international stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage client relationships.
  • Experience preparing engineering calculations for landfill systems.
  • Ability to interpret site investigation data and develop appropriate design solutions.
  • Willingness to undertake long-term international assignments to support project delivery, including within the Middle East and other regions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail, with a commitment to delivering high-quality consultancy support.
  • Able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and supporting their technical development.
  • Keeps up to date with relevant legislation, standards, trends and best practice in the waste and remediation sector.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a geographically distributed team, with flexibility to accommodate time zone differences for regular collaboration with UK-based colleagues.

Desirable technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualification

  • Experience working in the Middle East or similar international environments.
  • Practical knowledge of landfill gas/leachate system modelling, design, commissioning and operation.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
  • Familiarity with permitting and regulatory processes related to landfill operations.
  • Experience in a consultancy setting, with commercial awareness of working under various contracts.
  • Additional experience in the broader waste or environmental sector is an advantage.
