Senior/Principal Consultant – Sustainability Strategy and Reporting

Key Purpose
We are growing our international team supporting clients across Asia, the Middle East and Australia on ESG and sustainability reporting. You will play a key role in helping clients identify, assess and manage ESG risks and opportunities. Your expertise will guide organisations towards more sustainable practices and ensure compliance with evolving ESG regulations and reporting frameworks.

Key accountabilities
Project delivery
- Lead the delivery of ESG and sustainability reporting projects, ensuring high-quality outputs are delivered on time and within budget.
- Oversee project planning, task allocation, resource coordination and financial tracking across multiple assignments.
- Ensure compliance with Ricardo’s project governance and quality assurance processes, including internal reviews and client approvals.
- Proactively manage project risks and issues, implementing appropriate mitigation measures and maintaining clear communication with internal and external stakeholders.
Technical delivery and leadership
- Provide technical leadership on ESG strategy and reporting projects, ensuring alignment with relevant frameworks and standards, such as GRI, ISSB, SASB and the UN Global Compact.
- Lead the design and delivery of materiality assessments, including impact, financial and double materiality, tailored to the client’s sector, stakeholders and regulatory context.
- Design and oversee stakeholder engagement activities, including interviews, surveys and workshops, to inform materiality and strategy development.
- Develop and review high-quality reports and client deliverables, ensuring accuracy, clarity and relevance.
- Support the professional development of junior colleagues through technical guidance, coaching and mentoring.
- Contribute to the evolution of Ricardo’s ESG offering by sharing knowledge, refining internal tools and supporting best practice development.
Client relationships and business development
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, acting as a key point of contact throughout project delivery and ensuring client expectations are met or exceeded.
- Identify new business opportunities through project delivery, client engagement and market awareness.
- Support the preparation of proposals, bids and client presentations, including defining scopes of work, methodologies and delivery plans.
- Represent Ricardo in external meetings, workshops and industry events, supporting the visibility and credibility of our ESG and sustainability reporting services.
Additional/special features of the role
- Occasional international travel to client sites, project meetings and industry events will be required.
- Flexibility to work across time zones to support collaboration with global teams.
Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualification
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in sustainability, environmental management, business, or a related field.
- Significant consultancy or client-facing experience in ESG and sustainability reporting.
- In-depth knowledge of key ESG and sustainability reporting frameworks and standards (e.g. GRI, ISSB, SASB, UN Global Compact).
- Proven experience in delivering materiality assessments, including impact, financial and double materiality.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage the delivery of ESG reporting and strategy projects across multiple sectors.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, including experience conducting interviews, facilitating workshops and managing multi-stakeholder input.
- Excellent written and spoken business English, with the ability to deliver clear, professional outputs and engage confidently in meetings with international stakeholders.
- Strong analytical capabilities, with the ability to assess ESG risks and opportunities and derive strategic insights from data.
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver consistently to deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multi-disciplinary and geographically dispersed teams.
Desirable technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualification
- Experience supporting clients with reporting obligations under international regulations (e.g. CSRD, SECR).
- Familiarity with ESG ratings and rankings (e.g. MSCI, Sustainalytics, CDP) and their relevance to corporate ESG strategies.
- Experience working with clients in sectors such as manufacturing, energy, finance or professional services.
- Experience working with international clients, particularly in the UK or EU.
