The inaugural Bunkering & Sustainability Forum 2026 is designed to examine how island and mid-sized ports are preparing for the maritime energy transition.

As global demand for low-carbon fuels rises, islands and smaller ports must plan strategically to ensure access to appropriate energy sources without wasting resources on options that may not be viable or necessary for their specific context. This event aims to bring together similar bunkering hubs – and the bunker buyers and suppliers that operate there – to share insights, challenges and solutions related to the energy transition in maritime fuel supply.

Presenting

4:45pm, Tuesday 17th March

Participating in session 6, ‘In for the long haul: future-proofing ports, shipping and fuel infrastructure’, Laura Rolo, Principal Consultant & Southern Europe Lead in Power Advisory for Ricardo, will explore how ports and maritime infrastructure can be future proofed to support the long term energy transition.

Drawing on her experience in offshore wind development and port and supply chain assessment, her presentation will examine what “fit for purpose” looks like for next generation maritime ecosystems. Laura will address the evolving role of ports as energy and logistics hubs, the integration of digitalisation and data driven decision making, and the implications for vessel efficiency and fuel infrastructure.

Laura will also highlight the importance of transparency, resilience and cross sector collaboration in enabling ports and shipping to adapt to new fuels, technologies and market demands over the coming decades.

Optimising port energy systems: key steps to a successful energy transition

As ports accelerate their transition toward net zero, the complexity of multi-vector energy system planning is growing. With mounting pressure from regulatory frameworks – in the EU, for example, brought in through the EU Green Deal and Fit for 55 – and from ports’ own net zero commitments, maritime stakeholders must make strategic decisions that balance sustainability, cost-efficiency and operational resilience.

Ports must adapt, just not react, to climate change

In the face of accelerating climate change, ports are confronting a new operational reality. Once considered stable bastions of maritime commerce, these coastal infrastructures are now on the front lines of environmental volatility. Rising seas, increasing wind speeds and extreme temperatures are very real present-day disruptors.

Helping ports to reduce their environmental impacts and deliver sustainable growth

Ricardo has been working with port, marina and shipyard owners and operators for decades to help them understand their environmental impacts. Through our work, we have developed an in-depth understanding of the unique challenges that ports face and are ideally placed to help them manage these.
