Story
Congratulations on being shortlisted for the Women in Construction & Engineering Awards, Joanna! Can you share your thoughts on what this nomination means to you personally and professionally?
Thank you! Being nominated for the WICE Awards is truly an honour. It's a recognition of the work I've dedicated to the field of hydrogen technology and application. Personally, it's a validation of my passion for sustainability and the crucial role alternative fuels play in the future of mobility. Professionally, it opens doors to further conversations and collaborations within the construction and engineering industries.
Your role as the head of hydrogen in the business development team at Ricardo sounds fascinating. Can you tell us more about how you contribute to the development of alternative fuels and what opportunities you explore with your clients?
Certainly! In my role, I work closely with clients who are eager to enhance their expertise in alternative fuels, specifically in electrification and hydrogen. We explore various activities and opportunities to develop projects and services, both hardware and software, translating innovative ideas into reality. It's an exciting space to be in, and I'm fortunate to work within a business that actively engages in conversations to shape the future of these technologies.
It's clear that you are passionate about sustainability.
How do you see the role of alternative fuels, particularly hydrogen, shaping the future of mobility in the automotive and industrial sectors?
Alternative fuels, including hydrogen, are pivotal to the future of mobility. They offer sustainable solutions in both automotive and industrial sectors, reducing carbon footprint and promoting environmental responsibility. Hydrogen, in particular, has the potential to revolutionise these industries by providing clean and efficient energy sources. As we move towards a more sustainable future, the development and adoption of alternative fuels will play a crucial role in shaping the landscape of mobility.
Being a visible female presence in the male-dominated construction and engineering environment is undoubtedly impactful. How do you believe your visibility and success can inspire others, and what initiatives have you been involved in to support the next generation?
Visibility is key in inspiring others. By being present and successful in a male-dominated field, I hope to encourage more women to pursue careers in construction and engineering. I actively participate in trade shows and expos, speaking about our work to both male and female peers. Additionally, mentoring Ph.D. students at Nottingham University allows me to directly support and guide the next generation, fostering diversity in the field.
Can you share more about the forums and initiatives Ricardo has in place to promote open conversations and celebrate diversity?
Ricardo is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We host forums that encourage open conversations on various topics, including gender parity, cultural inclusivity, and sexual orientation. These forums raise awareness of our differences, celebrating the diversity within our team. Embracing our differences allows us to approach complex problems from various perspectives, contributing to our success as a business.
